The Anonymous, Beatriz Canfield Zapata's new body of work, continues the artist's interest in human rights abuses throughout the world, first taken up with her 2006 piece Sin Eco (Without Echo). A taster section of the overall exhibition featured at the Vibe Bar in London's Brick Lane on Saturday 31st October 2009 as part of a Day of the Dead Festival before the full exhibition traveled to Oxford, Tarragona and Brussels throughout 2009-2010.
The festival was a day of events to celebrate Mexico's love affair with death. The event in London included a procession of Day of the Dead characters, as typically seen in Mexico, which celebrates this date every year on 2nd November. Attractions included stilt walkers, altars, offerings, art and much more.
The festival, also known as All Saints Day, is a means for local Mexicans to remember the dead. Traditions include building private altars honouring the deceased and leaving gifts at their graves.
