live music gig by JOHN
SMITH and supported by John Grieve in the Crypt at St Andrew Holborn
Wednesday 7th of March 2007, 7.30pm
£10 entry includes free bar
John Smith is a guitar player and singer from Devon. He has gigged with folks like John Martyn, John Renbourn and Jools Holland, and sounds a bit growly and a bit soft at the same time. His first album, 'The Fox and The Monk', is out now. It is self-released, one hour long, and home to thirteen songs.
"Truly astonishing and affecting... In a post-James Blunt age,
it's a refreshing call to arms. An extraordinary debut... he has to
be one of the hardest working musicians around at the moment" -
pixelsurgeon.com
"His style involves glistening harmonics, bony fingers tapping
on the body of his instrument, the hint of an eastern drone, and the
flair for the gathering storm that made Jeff Buckley so attractive.
A bit of a live showstopper... this first LP is more accomplished than
we've any right to expect." - The Word
For many who are familiar with the work of JOHN
GRIEVE - an artist who, despite his relative youth, has already clocked
up an impressively eclectic range of experience within the music industry
- it may come as some surprise that Fumes of Fancy, launched in December
2006, is his first ever general release album.
With a voice likened to a young Bob Dylan, he is a young rising star in
the Scottish music scene and his incredible talent as a songwriter and
multi-instrumentalist takes you on a journey through folk, blues, country
and rock.
His professional experience as a composer for contemporary film scores
and live theatre productions proves his musical versatility and shines
through in his unique sound.
John Grieve delivers a brilliant debut album. With his infectious
songs, rich harmonies and strong production, Fumes of Fancy proves why
he is considered one of the most exciting and promising new young artists
for 2007, destined for greatness.
