Recent work by Areán has focused almost obsessively on the human figure as it wanders through undefeined landscape. They gradually emerge from the shadow to become part of a fragmented group, discontinuous without any contact. Sometimes they proceed alone with the simple gesture of a step, without any real movement. The immobility of the figures can give the impression of tranquility or resignation but there always remains a sombre, disconcerting sensation.
